History

The University building started out as Orleton Boys' School and included facilities such as a swimming pool and a gym. The main building also had dorm rooms for the boys. Cayley Halls was built when demand for office space meant that students could no longer live in the building, and is still being used as accommodation nowadays.

The institution was founded as a teacher training college called North Riding College in 1947. A downturn in numbers of trainee teachers in the early 1990s led it to expand into undergraduate degrees and it became known as University College Scarborough, and began offering BSc and BA degree level courses in an effort to avert closure in the early 1990s. The institution came to be known as the "University of Hull: Scarborough Campus" when it became a satellite of the University of Hull in August 2000.

Present day

Today the university campus, with its liberal arts feel, offers a wide range of undergraduate and post-graduate courses across the sciences, social sciences and arts, many taking full advantage of Scarborough's natural seaside environment. There is a student population of approximately 1,600.[1] This is from the University's total student population of 19,818.[2]

Teaching and research at the Scarborough Campus is based around five academic units:

Centre for Environmental and Marine Sciences

Centre for Environmental and Marine Sciences (CEMS[3]), which specialises in field based teaching and research, was previously known as Scarborough Centre for Coastal Studies. The name was changed to better reflect its undergraduate portfolio. Although Coastal Marine Biology remains the most popular course offered here, Ecology and Environmental Science are also strong. The centre attracts a variety of postgraduate research students that work on anything from Cleaner Wrasse and Fisheries to Hares, Adders and intertidal Ecology. The small size of the centre (~140 undergraduates, 12 postgraduates and 8 staff) makes for a very supportive learning environment where staff and students are on 1st name terms. Students from the centre have opportunities to travel[4] to Brazil, Mallorca, Egypt and the West Coast of Scotland as part of their course. Other teaching specialities in this centre are dive training and canopy science (tree climbing!)

School of Arts and New Media

The School of Arts and New Media (SANM) was newly formed in August 2006, combining the Centre for Internet Computing with Arts courses. The Creative Music Technology students work alongside ex-Goldfrapp drummer, Rowan Oliver,[5] and have many successful graduates including Fame Academy’s Sinéad Quinn, 2008 Idols (Finland) winner, Koop Arponen and more recently, Stephen Carter who is part of punk rock band Gallows.

Facilities

On campus there is a refectory, serving hot and cold meals and beverages throughout the day, with reduced weekend opening hours. The University has is Scarborough's Flagship Fairtrade Employer[6] and stocks fairtrade coffee, tea and other products as standard. There is also provision for food in Calvinos cafe bar, which was redeveloped over summer 2007. Calvinos was reopened at 6 p.m., 22 September 2007[7] by The BarWizards, Neil Lowry and Neil Garner.

There is extensive computer provision in Worseley Building, known as Open Access. The University is part of Eduroam wireless scheme,[8] allowing students to register wireless devices on the network. There is additional computing provision in the Java, Cappucino and Courtyard Labs, though access is restricted to students with access cards.

The campus has its own specialist library, the Keith Donaldson Library, equipped with a specialist media room, and study room.
